How much does it cost to install a kitchen faucet in Toronto, you may ask. This is a great question, and one many home owners share. We are going to provide you with a breakdown of the different factors that determine what it costs to have a new kitchen faucet installed.

If you just want to know the labor number then you can just scroll to the end of this article to find it, however we hope you find value in the material to follow as it will give a much better explanation of what problems you might run into and tips on how to avoid unexpected additional expenses and many other valuable information for consumers.

Selecting Your New Kitchen Sink Faucet

Most of the time, the actual faucet will be the biggest expense for this project. While you can spend as little as around $100 on a new faucet, we don’t recommend to do that as your user experience won’t be very pleasant. Instead, you should choose a faucet that fits with your space and suites your needs and tastes with all the necessary features that will make using it more enjoyable for you.

Really an entry level faucet that is still going to be enjoyable to use and has most of the standard features on the market are going to be in the range of $300-$500.

While mid range faucets will give you a much better user experience than the entry level models and usually will give you a few more convenience features. Most of these mid range faucets are between $600 and $800.

Then you have the higher end market, these tend to have more design options and some pretty cool features. These will typically be in the $900-$1200 range.

You do have another category here actually. This is the custom or designer range and the sky is the limit here. If you are looking for something in this category you will probably want to work with your designer for more information.

Situations That Might Cause Additional Costs

While most installations will be pretty straight forward, here are some common things that might increase the overall costs.

  • Probably the most common thing we run into is corroded and/or leaking shut-off valves. These valves are necessary and it’s important that they are in proper working order to avoid potential leaks down the road causing you to have a second visit down the road. We typically recommend changing these if they are starting to show signs of degradation, or if they are more than 10 years old. You will probably have that faucet for 10-20 years or more and you probably don’t want to have to change the value during that time if you can avoid it. The cost for this is usually around $50-$100 depending on a lot of different factors if being done at the same time as the faucet.
  • Probably the second most common thing we run into is an incompatibility with the existing hose lines or other set up and the new faucet. This is usually not a big deal and your installer should carry extra hose lines for this as it’s fairly common. This is usually around $15-$40.

There are of course many other things that can come up but generally speaking these are the 2 most common, and the ones to be aware of. These 2 can usually be identified ahead of time by taking pictures of the existing plumbing, the shut off valves, and the new faucet or at least the model number for the new faucet.

What To Do To Prepare For Your Installation

There are a few things we recommend to prepare for the installation of your new faucet to ensure a smooth process.

  • The first thing to do is to make sure you know where your main shut off is for your house or condo. This is something every homeowner should know anyways in case you need to shut off the water for the entire house or condo. If you don’t know where this is, it’s not the end of the world, your installer can help here also. If you live in a condo, you can ask your building management or maintenance person to show you where it is, but most often its located underneath either the kitchen sink or the bathroom sink behind usually a little door that can be opened with something flat like a butter knife if you don’t have a screwdriver.
  • The second thing you’ll want to do, is make sure the area is accessible. This includes the path to the sink as well as under the sink. Ideally you should remove all items from under the sink area and where the shutoffs are as these may be in the cabinet next to the sink cabinet.
  • Of course you should also have your faucet on site and near or in the kitchen.

Time Required to Install New Kitchen Faucet

Most installations will take between 1 hour and 2 hours 2 complete. While it is certainly possible for it to take longer if there are complications. So it’s probably a good idea to make sure you are available for at least 2-3 hours, however this may not be necessary if you communicate this ahead of time and give the installer instructions on how to enter and lock up and also where everything is. Its usually preferred if you are there on site during the installation, but it’s not always necessary.

What’s Involved In Getting Your New Kitchen Faucet Installed?

Here are the steps involved in installing a new kitchen faucet.

Step 1: Inspect the existing plumbing and make sure everything is in good working order. If anything needs to be changed out or replaced this will need to be done before installing the new kitchen faucet.

Step 2: Turn the water off at the kitchen using the shut off valve nearest the faucet (usually directly under the sink in the cabinet). If the shut off needs to be replaced or if you don’t have one in this location, then locate the main shut off and turn the water off for the entire house or condo.

Step 3: Prepare the site for working and open up the new kitchen faucet and make sure all of the necessary parts are accounted for. Also make sure that if anything additional that is not included in the standard product packaging such as additional hoses, new shut off or anything else you may need.

Step 4: Disconnect the old kitchen faucet and put it aside for later disposal or if there is nothing wrong with the faucet consider donating it to Habitat Restore or a similar organization.

Step 5: This is the point at which you would install the new shut off valve if you need to. If not, then just jump to step 6.

Step 6: Install the new kitchen faucet, install the new hoses with Teflon tape (plumbers tape), tighten everything down and make sure its all aligned.

Step 7: Turn the water back on and check for any leaks. If you don’t have any leaks then clean up your work space and you’re all set.

  • A High Efficiency model (usually around 1.28 Gallons per flush)

Labor Cost To Install Your Stylish New Toilet

We are going to make a few assumptions here, and if you’re like most consumers you’re probably looking for the following characteristics in the person or company you hire for probably anything.

  • Knowledgeable and Professional
  • Trustworthy and responsible especially if you have a family or pets
  • Reliable! You’re busy and don’t have time to be chasing after people
  • Dependable! You want to know that the person you hire is actually going to show up
  • Responsive! We’ve all been there personally, where we just don’t really want to respond to someone for whatever reason maybe you had a difficult week, and that’s fine we’re only human! However, as a service based business, it’s just not acceptable or respectful of the clients time, to make your customers wait 3 days for a response.
  • Licensed, although not always relevant, as many trades don’t even have an option to be licensed or your project may not require a licensed professional.
  • Insured, while some people don’t care too much or think about this, it is important, and we will probably get into why it’s important to hire insured companies and individuals in a future article.

While this is not an exhaustive list, its a pretty good start! The last 2 items on the list are pretty easy to get and also to verify (we will do an article on how to vet a service company or individual in a future article, and really dive deep into it). However the first five characteristics or personality traits are a little harder to come by, especially in the trades, and here’s a dominant reason why I think this is the case.

Labor Supply And Demand

Those qualities are in demand in every industry and people with that list of qualities have quite a few career options and the trades are probably not high on the list of career choices for most, its hard, dirty work oftentimes. These factors and many others lead to a relatively low supply of quality trades people out there. That being said, they most certainly do exist, however they are difficult to find and are almost never available!

Now that we have addressed the supply side of things, lets address the demand side…

Everyone wants to work with a knowledgeable, professional, trustworthy, responsible, reliable, dependable, responsive, communicative person or company! Wow! What a tall order!

My point to all this, is that it’s very difficult to find people that fit the bill. Not just as a consumer, but also as a service company looking to hire quality people to represent the company and the brand. This all leads to relatively high labor costs, but you’re not really hiring someone to install a toilet for you. You are really hiring someone that is knowledgeable, professional, trustworthy, responsible, reliable, dependable, responsive, and communicative that also happens to be really good at installing toilets and other things!

Now that we’ve explained why labor costs are relatively high in the current market, let’s break down what labor is actually involved in installing a toilet specifically.

Real World Labor Costs To Install a New Toilet

It all starts with marketing and sales, which really starts with amazing customer service, but we won’t get into that in this article, we will just look at the job flow when it comes to the direct labor costs of the service pro that is going to be installing your new toilet! Although I do want to note, that if you are hiring a one man operation, there is a lot more that goes into every job, and all of that work is done by the same person installing said toilet.

Step 1: Is to make sure you have everything you need, both tools and materials for the upcoming job (usually for a toilet install, this doesn’t really take very much time at all, as usually you just need a few basic tools and a toilet wax seal ring, assuming the customer already has the toilet on site).

Step 2: 15-30 minutes drive time to the site.

Step 3: 5-15 minutes for parking and unloading tools, depending on location and if you are in a house or a condo.

Step 4: 20-30 minutes to uninstall the old toilet, and prep the site for the new toilet. This includes:

  • Cutting the existing silicon/caulking
  • Water shut off
  • Draining the tank and bowl as much as possible
  • Unbolting the existing toilet
  • Removing the toilet and either bringing it to a customer defined spot or bringing it to the van/truck for later disposal (which also has a cost both disposal and labor).
  • Clean up any excess water
  • Scrape the old silicone/caulk
  • Inspect the flange
  • Install new gasket
  • Install new toilet bolts
  • Etc.

Step 5: 20-30 minutes to install a new toilet. This includes:

  • Unboxing the new toilet
  • Inspecting for any damage before installation
  • Placing the toilet precisely over the seal and aligning it properly
  • Securing the toilet down
  • Hooking up the new supply line
  • Testing for any leaks and ensuring smooth operation
  • Installing toilet seat
  • Silicone/caulk around base of toilet.

Step 6: 10-20 minutes for site cleanup, invoicing, and client interactions.

Step 7: If the toilet is to be disposed of off site, there are additional costs, such as storage of the old toilet (you don’t really take one or even 5 toilets, if you’re doing 5 toilets that day to the landfill, you store them until you have enough waste to make it worth a trip to the landfill or a pick-up if you hire that out), then of course disposal fees and the labor to facilitate that.

So there you have it, your rough labor time to install a toilet!

Best case scenario: 70 minutes

Most usual scenarios: 125 minutes or just over 2 hours

Average labor costs for a company buying labor in bulk (full-time employee guaranteed 40 hours a week) with basic and mandatory benefits (2 weeks paid vacation, paid lunches, paid breaks, paid training), with labor burden (EI, CPP, WSIB, additional liability, additional insurance, etc.

$45/man hour

But if you are hiring top talent and investing in great training, your bulk labor costs are most likely closer to $55/man hour

So your labor costs alone are $90-$110 for a toilet installation because if you are going to run a successful business that will be around for years to come, you never set your pricing based on best case scenarios, you base it on the 2 hours not the 70minutes.

Operating Costs Of a Business

Then you have other variables that you have to pay such as…

  • Fuel,
  • Vehicle repairs/maintenance
  • Small supplies and materials
  • Warranty work, even if its 1 of every 50 or 100 or 500 jobs, you need to include this, if you are going to offer a warranty, because no matter how great you are as a company, you will have call backs every X number of jobs completed, and you need to service those warranty orders.
  • Customer service/support
  • Billing/transaction processing expenses
  • Etc.

Then you have your fixed overhead costs such as…

  • Support staff
  • Office/ warehouse lease/rent
  • Vehicles and tools purchase/lease or finance
  • Owner’s salary (yes the owner gets a salary too lol)
  • Marketing, Sales, and Advertising
  • Different insurances
  • Inventory
  • And many other smaller but still significant things

Then you need to pay taxes on revenue…

And you need to have some profit left over to be able to reinvest back into the business and when something inevitably goes wrong…

As you can see, there is a lot behind the scenes and also in front that has to happen in order to get that shiny new toilet installed for you.

Other Things To Consider

These numbers are for a typical installation of a toilet in Toronto and doesn’t take into consideration other factors. Such as:

  • A cracked flange that needs to be addressed before installing your new toilet
  • A corroded shut-off valve that needs to be replaced
  • Difficult to get to location (3-4 flights of narrow stairs, very long distance from available parking and install area, etc.)
